Kalu Rinpoche

Kalu Rinpoche was born in 1905 in Kham (Eastern Tibet). He was ordained a monk at the age of 11, when he was 16 he started a three year retreat and between the age of 25 and 40 he led an ascetic life devoted solely to meditation in the mountains. He received the  full transmission of the Shangpa and Karma Kagyu lineages.

Thanks to this he became a master of retreats. At the request of the 16th Karmapa he left Tibet in 1955 and travelled with lectures around Asia, Europe and North America. Hannah and Ole Nydahl became Kalu Rinpoche's students at the16th Karmapa's request. They received from him instructions for the preliminary practices (Tib. Ngondro) and the Rinchen Terdzo transmission from Nyingma school. Hannah and Ole Nydahl organized Kalu Rinpoche's travels around Europe and North America. Kalu Rinpoche died in 1989 in the Sonada monastery (Eastern India).
